Jay “Hollywood” Wilson Has Passed Away

It is with great sadness and shock that I report that Jay “Hollywood” Wilson, father, brother, son, world champion, teacher, and friend, died today (March 2rd). He was jogging in the early evening, collapsed, and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, presumably and surprisingly of natural causes. I don’t have more information at this time.

Jay was especially excited today because the lease was only a few days from signing and he was going to fulfill his dream of owning his own studio.

Studio Update – Almost There

Friends, the landlord has been ridiculously slow.  We expect to finally get the studio lease  signed soon. Meanwhile here are a few details.

  • The studio location is the southeast corner of  Coit & Arapaho in Richardson.  It’s the building on Coit next to the gas station on the corner. We’ll have the two units next to Coit.  The corner unit used to be a Radio Shack.
  • The partners and management team are Jay, Troy (former UFC cross training trainer and ex-NFL football player), and Tim (former UFC general and sales manager).
  • The studio will be called Warrior Fitness Empire (WFE).  It will have an open mat area, weights, and a few machines so you can work out when there aren’t classes.  WFE will offer two primary programs. Jay will run martial arts under the name Hollywood Muay Thai  with Muay Thai, kickboxing, boxing, and yoga classes.   Troy will run cross-training under the Training for Warriors system.  A few additional UFC trainers and a yoga teacher will be joining the studio.
  • An architect and general contractor have already been to the studio and are developing the renovation blueprint.  They’ll be ready to get started right after the lease is signed.
  • Jay will hold pre-opening classes in the studio or another space in the shopping center, depending on the rebuild schedule.

Studio Progress and more

It’s been and will be a long road to opening a new studio, including navigating partners, funding, leases, and buildout.  Problems can crop up and deals fall apart for a lot of reasons.  So we’re careful about overpromising and try to be as transparent as we can about the process.  As always, we appreciate your patience.

We have funding approval and applied for a lease last week for the Richardson Coit & Arapaho location. It may take another week or two for lease negotiations and signing and partner agreement.

On the brighter side the Arctic cold snap is finally gone and we’ll be re-starting our  classes in East Plano on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Secret to Many More Happy New Years

From The Right Dose of Exercise for a Longer Life:

Two  large scale studies show the magic formula to long life.  Work out an average of an hour a day or more with at least a third of that in an intense program or activity.  This level reduces your risk of dying prematurely by about 50%.

Intensity. Those who spent more than 30 percent of their exercise time in strenuous activities [like Jay’s Kickboxing] gained an extra 13 percent reduction in early mortality.

Duration. The more you work out, including moderate fitness like brisk walking, the longer you typically will live.

  • Those who exercised a little lowered their risk of premature death by 20 percent.
  • Those who met the typical recommendation of  150 minutes per week had a 31 percent less risk of dying.
  • The sweet spot was 450 minutes per week, or about an hour per day.  These people  were 39 percent less likely to die prematurely.
  • Above that level the benefits plateaued and never significantly declined.
